By adapting its legislation to that of the European Union, the Republic of Croatia introduced the Act on a Sustainable Use of Pesticides (Official Gazette 14/14) in 2014, based on the European Union’s Directive 2009/128/EC. The Act and the Directive cover the areas of farmers’ education about sustainable use of pesticides and their proper storage, spraying evidence, return of pesticide packaging, and the very important technical inspection of machines and devices for plant protection.
The Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences Osijek has been operating in this area for over twenty years via its Department of Agricultural Technology and Renewable Energy Sources—that is, the Department of Machinery and Devices in Plant Production. During the years of operation, scientific research, cooperation with the economic entities, and professional training, the Faculty staff has participated in the implementation of the Act on a Sustainable Use of Pesticides at two experimental stations for the technical inspection of plant‐protection machinery.
On the the Republic of Croatia’s market, the Faculty participates, upon an authorization by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Croatia, in a technical inspection on two experimental stations, designated as 001 and 004, respectively. Since 2014, these two stations have inspected thousands of machines and devices for plant protection and have provided the end users (i.e., the farmers) with technical formalities of machine inspection and have transferred knowledge and competences acquired through many years of work in this field. In addition to carrying out the technical inspection procedure, this signifies that the Faculty’s staff has educated the farmers about each machine and device component, its importance, and the norms stipulated by the Act, expected to be met by each end user.
